This Saturday, I was on a mission to explore the area some more. So I got into my car, drove across the bridge, and wandered through southern Illinois. I have heard about the Bald Knob Cross, so when found signs pointing towards it, I followed them through a winding 5-mile road until I reached the massive structure.
Completed in 1963, the cross stands 111 feet tall and, when lit at night, is visible over an area of more than 7,500 square miles.
